Travel and adventure can be challenging or overwhelming for neurodiverse families. Shifts in routines, sensory overload, and the newness of it all cause many families shy away from it. But it can also have a mind-opening impact and this site shares personal experiences and expert insights to help your family get the most out of rocketing around.
Neurodiversity refers to a constellation of certain developmental conditions that are normal variations in the brain. Neurodiverse people behave, think, and learn differently from people with neurotypical brains. These differences include strengths. In a word, neurodiverse people are awesome. Neurodiverse people might be autistic, live with ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, auditory processing disorder, PTSD, Tourette’s, epilepsy, and other mental and behavioral health conditions and learning challenges.
Autism, also referred to as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), “refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.” An estimated 1 in 36 children living in the U.S. are autistic.
This language-based learning condition presents through a cluster of symptoms resulting in an individual experiencing difficulties “with specific language skills, particularly reading. Students with dyslexia usually experience difficulties with other language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words.
